A national switch to be implemented in Fiji will allow the government to provide pension and welfare benefits via ATM cards, which recipients can use to withdraw cash at an ATM.

Additionally the switch will allow remotely located farmers and others to deposit money into their bank account using the closest ATM — regardless of where they bank — and pay a smaller fee than banks now charge, a report in the Fiji Sun said.

The Ministry for Economy is in talks with banks about joining the network, which will cost approximately $60,000 to roll out, according to the report.

“We have to create a centralized switching facility whereby all the banks will have to connect,” a government official said.
